Oil Told You So …

Posted by Cynical Sarah on April 30, 2010

I hate to say “I told you so,” but … I told you so. (Ok, maybe I do like saying it.) Offshore drilling isn’t worth the risk it poses to the environment. Our time and efforts are better spent finding alternative, clean energy sources instead of wasting time allowing more off-shore drilling as part of President Obama’s economic and environmental plans.

The disaster on Deepwater Horizon and the resulting oil leak pretty much made the point clear for me and any other environmentally conscious person who was objecting to allowing more drilling. The initial explosion on the oil rig was a tragedy. The resulting 5,000 barrel-per-day leakage of oil into the Gulf of Mexico is an environmental disaster.

Review: Happy Town

Posted by Cynical Sarah on April 29, 2010

ABC has a new show that debuted this week – Happy Town. I was mildly intrigued by the previews I saw and curious to see what a TV show that Sam Neill has attached himself to would be like. (For those who don’t know, Sam Neill is the guy from Jurassic Park, and how a rugged palaeontologist was going to fit into a small town in Minnesota was beyond my imagination.)

I set the show to record on the DVR last night and fired it up this morning during the dead hour on TV when then only thing on the HD channels are Dr. Phil, Maury, Dr. Oz and things getting killed or autopsied for nature/learning shows. I guess the first good thing I can say about Happy Town is that it filled that hour of my life much better than the regular programming on TV would have.

Bathing Suit Bust

Posted by Cynical Sarah on April 27, 2010

It’s nearing bathing-suit season – according to the calendar even if the weather isn’t cooperating just yet. I nee a new swimsuit for aquafit, a water aerobics class I like to do, and I figured now was a good time to look.

My hope was there would still be a good selection to choose from and maybe, just maybe, they’d also be on sale too.

I’ve only looked in two stores so far – Costco and Zellers – but already I’m irritated by the whole process.

Earth Strikes Back

Posted by Cynical Sarah on April 23, 2010

This week there were going green messages everywhere I looked. April 22nd was Earth Day and many places were celebrating all week long with their Earth friendly promotions.

Generally I’m all for trying to decrease my carbon footprint. I use reusable shopping bags, and I was even happy to get another one for free when I got one as an Earth Day promotion at a store on Thursday. At least I assume it was an Earth Day promotion since that particular computer store doesn’t usually give out reusable, cloth bags, but it could also have been a valued customer gift since I’ve been there a lot to get computer components for Troy’s computer the last few months.

April’s Culinary Adventures

Posted by Cynical Sarah on April 17, 2010

It’s the second month into my Cooking Light magazine subscription, and I’m still on track with trying at least one recipe per month. In fact, I was what Canadians call a “keener” and tried three recipes so far this month.

I started with a Chicken with Lemon and Olives recipe. I’m always looking for new ways to jazz up chicken since we eat a lot of it. There are only so many variations on stir-fry or flavors of chicken legs I can come up with on my own.

DWTS – Sade Steals the Show

Posted by Cynical Sarah on April 15, 2010

We’re in Week 4 of Dancing With The Stars, and so far my favorite moment of the season doesn’t involve dancing. On the result show this week Sade performed twice and blew away any other performance – music or dancing – that I’ve seen through several seasons of viewing.

I was entranced with the performance of “Babyfather,” and reminded how much I’ve liked Sade’s work. Then when she came back for a second performance, she granted my silent wish that she’d do the always popular “Sweetest Taboo.” I will likely head out to buy Sade’s latest album, and I couldn’t even tell you who danced while she was performing.
