Review: Eat, Pray, Love

Posted by Cynical Sarah on June 17, 2010

Generally I chose books like I choose the movies I watch; I look for entertainment value above all else. However, sometimes I stumble across a more artsy/enlightening/literary/soul searching book that catches my interest. This time it was Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert.

In a moment of weakness I was watching Julia Roberts on Oprah discussing the book and her experience starring in the movie. I’d never even heard of Eat, Pray, Love and here it was inspiring Julia Roberts, being talked about on Oprah and developing a small cult following.

Review: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Posted by Cynical Sarah on June 15, 2010

I can’t recall ever reading a Jane Austen novel. I’ve seen a few of the movies based on her books, but based on what I saw, I had no urge to read the books. At heart they seem to be basically Victorian era romance novels; however, you throw in some zombies, and I’m intrigued.

I had actually stopped at the bookstore the other day to pick up a different book, but in a moment of judging a book by its cover, I decided I had to give Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith a try. I was curious how someone could incorporate zombies into a Jane Austen novel without treading too much on her own style of storytelling as well as her basic storyline.

Simon Night on American Idol

Posted by Cynical Sarah on May 27, 2010

The American Idol finale was the background soundtrack while I was studying last night. I haven’t watched the show all season, but I figured at least it would mostly be music while I crammed in more Project Management info before my test next week.

Sure, it was mostly music, but it was also mostly a big love fest and goodbye to Simon Cowell.

Review: Happy Town

Posted by Cynical Sarah on April 29, 2010

ABC has a new show that debuted this week – Happy Town. I was mildly intrigued by the previews I saw and curious to see what a TV show that Sam Neill has attached himself to would be like. (For those who don’t know, Sam Neill is the guy from Jurassic Park, and how a rugged palaeontologist was going to fit into a small town in Minnesota was beyond my imagination.)

I set the show to record on the DVR last night and fired it up this morning during the dead hour on TV when then only thing on the HD channels are Dr. Phil, Maury, Dr. Oz and things getting killed or autopsied for nature/learning shows. I guess the first good thing I can say about Happy Town is that it filled that hour of my life much better than the regular programming on TV would have.

Review: The Hurt Locker

Posted by Cynical Sarah on March 26, 2010

I’m finally starting to get around to watching some of the movies that were center stage at the Oscars. Might as well start with the big winner for the evening, best picture The Hurt Locker.

My initial feeling after the movie was over was that it was intense. Most movies will give you a break from the stress with a little humor break or just a break in the action. The Hurt Locker puts you on edge from the very first scene and the only break you get is at the end.

DWTS: Let the Dancing Begin Again!

Posted by Cynical Sarah on March 25, 2010

The first time I tuned in to Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) it was for work reasons. Shannon Elizabeth was on, and as a pseudo poker celebrity, I had to write about her stint on the show for the website I was working on at the time.

When the season was finally over, I breathed a sigh of relief at not ever having to watch again. Then the season came with Chuck Liddell. There’s no work excuse for wanting to watch him; I just like the UFC and wanted to see how he’d do. I watched the entire season even though he was booted near the middle.
