Design Company All About Recycling

A new design company opened its doors in Seattle today that will is focused on recycling old garments. DUDS, which stands for Die Ugly Dress shop , plans to help past, present and future bridesmaids rework their dresses into garments they can wear again.
“There are so many girls out there with hideous or overly-formal dresses that they’ll never wear again,” said DUDS founder Jessica Singer. “At DUDS we’ll work with them to transform those dresses into something they can be proud to wear again.
Singer got the idea after her seventh turn as a bridesmaid. She said she had seven dresses in her closet that she’d spent a pretty penny on even though they’d never get worn again.
“Too many brides end up picking out dresses for their maids that are just awful or totally unwearable again,” Singer said. “I was trying to figure out what to do with mine when I realized with just a few minor changes some of them could be really nice.”
Singer teamed up with seamstress Jennifer Brother to rework some of her own dresses and then they went into business together.
“Singer has some really great ideas that work well to transform the dresses. She’s sort of the designer and salesperson, while I’m the one that works behind the scenes to make it happen.”
They have some of Singer’s old dresses on display to show off some of their ideas. They’ve done simple changes like turning a dress into a simple skirt to changing one dress into a fitted blazer.
Brother said they’ve already had a few customers come in to check them out and bring in ugly dresses to be changed. She said they’ve even had people come in with dresses as a challenge to their claim that they can make all dresses into something useful.
“With all the ugly dresses out there, we expect to have a steady customer base to last us for as long as we want to stay in business,” said Brother. “We definitely welcome the challenge of all these dresses and hope we can make everyone happy.”
