Domesticated Weekends
Posted by Cynical Sarah on November 20, 2007
Lately my definition of a busy weekend is one where I leave the condo at least once, have lots of hockey and football to watch, and plenty of small projects at home that I should be doing.
By that definition, I’m pretty much busy every weekend these days. Especially when you count Helper Troy’s hockey games, watching Canucks games, seeing if the Colts games are on TV and then also checking on the other hockey teams so I can see how my fantasy hockey team is doing. Yes, I still manage to fit in doing some projects at home in there too. My life may not be exciting, but at least I’ve got plenty to be doing all the time.
This weekend was no different. After a quick start in my office’s fantasy hockey team, I had somehow dropped to 14th place in the last few weeks. I needed a big Saturday of points to help get me back on track and hopefully start propelling back up the standings.
So on Saturday, we watched the Canucks play, and I watched the game more intently than I ever have before. My top players (or first and second round picks if you will) were the Sedin twins and I needed them to start scoring more. Every time they were on the ice, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for them to get their fancy ass plays set up and put in some goals.
For once, they obliged. I got three points off of each of them through goals and assists, and didn’t even mind that one of my players was on the opposing team and didn’t manage to get anything on the night.
Then there was the business of logging into my team so I could look up the other players I had playing on the night, which was pretty much all by a goalie and a defenseman. This has become my routine pretty much every night of the week that I have players on the ice. Log in, see who’s playing, go to NHL.com and see if anyone got goals or assists to give my team some points. It’s like an addiction – and another good reason for me to stay away from sports betting since I’d spend all my free time trying to see how teams are doing and probably spending a lot of money on them as well.
On Sunday, once all the fantasy teams’ totals had been calculated for Saturday, I had to log in again to our fantasy league to see where I was at now. Another habit I’m forming on a day-to-day basis. I don’t think I would have developed this habit had I had a bad start to the season. But once I started at the top of the league, and then started sinking, I had to keep checking in and seeing how things were going. As the only girl playing, I have this need to at least not end up in last place and ruin the image of sports junky girls everywhere.
Sunday also brought on a dilemma – Helper Troy had a game Sunday afternoon, starting right smack in the middle of the Colts vs. Patriots game. As fans of my site know, I’m a Colts fan so I hate to miss any televised game, but this also wasn’t any ordinary televised game. This was the two undefeated super-giants of the season coming head-to-head, and only one could walk away with the win.
The compromise was to watch the beginning of the game and then head to Troy’s hockey game in hopes that whatever rink he was in would be near a television showing the game. At least that wish was granted. I got to sit in the bar, by the window where I could see the hockey game and at the same time turn and watch football on the big screen. Too bad both the teams I wanted to see both lost too.
Of course, amidst all this “sports stuff” I had to find time for all the domestic projects that need to be done around here, like cleaning out kitty litter boxes, cleaning up the kitchen, finding some place for all the pumpkin carving accessories we bought for Halloween, and all sorts of other things I generally try to avoid during the rest of the week. Yep, that’s certainly a busy weekend.
And there’s nothing like recounting your domesticated weekend to make you feel like an old married person.
