DWTS: Brenda Bites the Dust

Shannen Doherty was the first one to go this season on Dancing with the Stars. It was proof positive of how big a popularity contest the show is.

There were plenty of people with lower scores after two nights of dancing, and based on scores Buzz Aldren and Kate Gosselin were shoe-ins for the bottom two. But the reality show gods were in Kate’s favor, and I’m guessing people just didn’t have the heart to not vote for Buzz. Instead Shannen and Pamela Anderson ended up in the bottom two.

I was a little surprised to see Pamela facing elimination. Of all the stars in this season, she is probably the most recognizable, and her scores were decent. At the very least she’s a bit of a character.

Come to think of it, though, the typical audience for DWTS isn’t the same as Pamela’s typical admirers. Not many fans of the Baywatch babe would be caught dead watching the show much less picking up the phone to vote for someone on the show. Perhaps DWTS producers were hoping she’d draw in more of that audience – help butch up their viewership a little bit.

Hopefully they’re right and she does start picking up some votes. It’s not that she was spectacular, but she’s not so bad she should go home in the first couple of weeks. Neither was Shannen Doherty for that matter. She showed a lot of promise with her jive this week compared to her jerky waltz in the premiere. She just didn’t have the fan base to pull her through.

It has to be a tad bit embarrassing to pull in decent scores but find out you can’t pull in more votes than someone like Kate Gosselin. Time to start making some personal pleas to your fan clubs if you’re one of the remaining people on the show.
