Earth Strikes Back
Posted by Cynical Sarah on April 23, 2010
This week there were going green messages everywhere I looked. April 22nd was Earth Day and many places were celebrating all week long with their Earth friendly promotions.
Generally I’m all for trying to decrease my carbon footprint. I use reusable shopping bags, and I was even happy to get another one for free when I got one as an Earth Day promotion at a store on Thursday. At least I assume it was an Earth Day promotion since that particular computer store doesn’t usually give out reusable, cloth bags, but it could also have been a valued customer gift since I’ve been there a lot to get computer components for Troy’s computer the last few months.
But anyway, I try to do my part with recycling, public transit and buying local. While it’s nice to see others making a little extra effort too this week. I’m starting to think it’s not enough to appease Earth, though.
We seem to have royally pissed her off. She’s been sending us warning signs for years now with the occasional major earthquake and tsunamis, but the past six months or so have made me start to think I need to make a sandwich-board that says “The end is near!” and start marching around down town.
Volcanic eruptions that are disrupting air travel. Severe earthquakes in Haiti, Chilli and California. Even hurricanes and tornadoes are on the rise and more severe.
Earth is waging war against us, and we’re throwing her a little party. “Happy Birthday Earth! Here’s a new tree for you to grow, and I skipped showering today just for you!”
Meanwhile Earth is already writing her snarky “Thank you” notes with little return gifts like flooding, mudslides and forest fires.
“Thank you, President Obama, for your lovely Earth Day statement and talk about investment in clean energy. I hope you enjoyed the flooding and winter storms in Nebraska, North Dakota and West Virginia for which you’re now committing federal aid to help with recovery efforts.”
There’s definitely a message being sent, and we’re not picking up on it fast enough. Earth is not happy – maybe it’s time to start celebrating Earth all year long before it gets to the point where the only way to appease her is to start sacrificing virgins again.
