New Rock Opera to Debut on Broadway

After years of television and movie success, the Star Trek franchise will enter the stage realm. “Star Trek: Clash of the Klingons” is scheduled to open on Broadway July 7.
The show will focus on Klingon history and how they ended up a part of the Federation. To bring that story to life, it was written as an opera.
“The Klingon mannerisms and story naturally lend themselves to the opera genre,” said producer Harvy Goldman. “That genre doesn’t do as well anymore though. Most musical productions are taken down a notch to the ‘musical’ genre instead.”
Goldman said musicals tend to be though of as silly or unmanly though and they didn’t want that to take anything away from the Klingon story.
“That’s when someone on our staff suggested a rock opera instead. It would have a more modern edge to it and fit better with the drama involved in the story,” Goldman said.
Goldman and Marcus Harmel, writer of “Clash of the Klingons,” worked with a couple different musicians and songwriters to get the affect they wanted. Dave Navarro, who’s worked with the rock bands Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Jane’s Addiction, was brought in to help with the guitar edge they needed.
Navarro and lyricist Fred Durst, from Limp Bizkit, worked together to create a rough version of the opera. Elton John was then brought in to help smooth the edges and put the finishing touches on the production.
“Elton John was the natural choice. Navarro and Durst gave us the rock edge we wanted, but Elton has the experience with this sort of thing that we needed to make it all work,” Goldman said. “He did a great job too without compromising the rock and roll.”
Trekkies across the nation are already looking forward to the new Broadway show. It was the biggest news buzzing around at the latest Star Trek convention in Las Vegas.
“Everyone was talking about it especially the Klingon fans,” said event manager George Tekkai.
Several fans were already making plans to get tickets to opening night.
“You can definitely expect people to be showing up in their finest Trekkie gear,” Tekkai said.
Goldman said these are the built-in fans they welcome with open arms and count on for the production to be a success.
“With a franchise like Star Trek, you have to expect the regular fans to show up,” Goldman said. “In fact, we hope they’ll come and bring all their friends too.”
