Some Beach, Somewhere

Posted by Cynical Sarah on February 8, 2007

This week I’m heading out for a real vacation. It’s been a long time since I’ve taken a real vacation. In fact, probably the last time I had what I would define as a “real” vacation was when my family went to Disneyland when I was about 9 or 10 years old.

So what constitutes a real vacation? A real vacation is more than just a long weekend, and it involves going someplace fun.

A real vacation, however, doesn’t involve visiting any sort of relative or friend, no matter how cool of a location the live in, house sitting, or any trip where you end up having to do some work too.

Using that criteria, it’s been nearly 20 years since I’ve had a real vacation. I’ve taken some fun trips, but most of them have been long weekends. I took a week off a few years back to spend a week visiting my best friend and her family. But trips to visit family and friends aren’t so much a vacation as they are a necessity to stay in touch.

So now Troy and I are heading out on a vacation for about a week where we won’t be visiting anyone, will be completely away from work and will probably not do much beyond enjoying the beach and the ocean and the warm weather.

This is our honeymoon trip, finally, almost a year and a half after getting married. I’m pretty excited about it and can’t wait to have nothing to do but relax and enjoy the time.

At the same time, it’ll be an interesting trip for Troy. He’s already concerned about not being bored during the 8.5 hour flight we’ll have to get to our destination. If he’s worried about a few hours of boredom, I’m not really sure how he’s going to handle a full week at a resort with no set plans.

Of course, where we’re going there will be plenty of different activities offered if we want to get involved. There are tennis courts, dance classes, language courses, along with the various day trips they offer for an additional charge.

There will be plenty to do, but there could be a pretty big gap between how much I want to do and how much the hubby wants to do. He’s a “do things” kinda guy, and I’m looking forward to just being a beach bum and relaxing for a week.

My ideal would be to spend all day on the beach with occasional dips in the ocean or the pool. We’ll do some snorkelling if it’s good in the area and perhaps take one of the snorkelling day trips. Other than that, the most excitement I expect will be checking out what’s on the buffet that day for meals and maybe a trip into town to see the local culture.

However, I foresee a very bored, restless Troy once we get away from his computers, digital cable and cell phone. We are taking a camera, video camera and possibly a portable DVD player, though, so he won’t be completely gadget free for the week.

The trick will be to find the right balance of my idea of a fun vacation and his not being completely bored so that we’ll actually go on a real vacation again someday. I’d hate for relaxing beach time to become an item on his “banned” list.
