Review: Happy Town
Posted by Cynical Sarah on April 29, 2010
ABC has a new show that debuted this week – Happy Town. I was mildly intrigued by the previews I saw and curious to see what a TV show that Sam Neill has attached himself to would be like. (For those who don’t know, Sam Neill is the guy from Jurassic Park, and how a rugged palaeontologist was going to fit into a small town in Minnesota was beyond my imagination.)
I set the show to record on the DVR last night and fired it up this morning during the dead hour on TV when then only thing on the HD channels are Dr. Phil, Maury, Dr. Oz and things getting killed or autopsied for nature/learning shows. I guess the first good thing I can say about Happy Town is that it filled that hour of my life much better than the regular programming on TV would have.

Review: Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson
Posted by Cynical Sarah on March 8, 2010
Cryptonomicon is a book my husband picked up a while ago. I discovered it on our dusty bookshelf and decided to give it a look.
This book is 1,130 pages long, and I do mean long. Only through sheer will did I make it through the first 200-300 pages to finally get to the point where I was hooked and needed to see how the rest of the story was going to play out. (I’m pretty sure Troy didn’t make it to that point. A dog-eared Page 263 marks where he gave up.)

‘Prelude to Mars’ by Arthur C. Clarke

I initially picked this book up for my brother last summer at a garage sale intending to give it to him when I saw him at Christmas. The months between those two points erased it from my memory, however, and I picked it off the book shelf in January for something to do in my free time.
