The Fur Flies

The thermometer took a big dip again this week bringing with it more snow and nasty cold weather. The result, once again more people on public transit so they won’t have to drive the icy roads downtown to work.
The other result was everyone pulling their winter gear out of the back of the closet once again. Some of those big winter coats were the ones sort of in style right now that have the fur trim on them. I’ve never been a fan of the fur trim. It’s a little too girly for my taste, and now I’ve found another reason to dislike it.
I found out this week that fur trim on hoods and collars is one of the most annoying things to have right in your face when you’re crammed in like sardines on the Skytrain. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one irritated by it either.
One morning as I found a spot on the train, I got stuck behind a girl with a fur trimmed hood, and she had the hood down while on the train. She was fairly tall, and I’m certainly not, so the fur trim ended up being right level with my nose. There really wasn’t anywhere for me to go either, so I had to stand there and try not to be completely maddened by the tickling at my nose.
A few stops later, enough people had moved around to let people off so that I was able to move over.
My spot was replaced by a man a few inches taller than me who had to put up with the fur trim tickling him under the chin instead of the nose.
The poor guy tried everything to find a way to stand so he wasn’t touching the hood, but it was pretty much impossible. He too was forced to tolerate the hood until his stop. Though I wouldn’t put it past him to have gotten off early just to get away from the hood.
I think a new rule should be added for the Skytrain. No fur trimmed coats – real or fake. I’m sure those of us who were stuck next to all the fur on the train during the cold weather could easily band together and make that rule stick.
