Welcome to my special view of the world.

The Race is On

Posted by Cynical Sarah on April 12, 2006

As I mentioned before, I’m now a legal resident of Canada. This ultimately means I have no excuse for not getting a job now. It’ll be back to the rat race for me pretty soon.

It’s not that I wasn’t trying to get a job before. I kept my eye out for freelance work in the U.S. that I could do, and I sent out resumes for jobs in Canada that I thought I’d like. You never know, someone might take a chance on me and the chances of getting a temporary work permit. But until now, I could pretty much count on not being offered a job because of my non-legal status.

That fantasy life is no longer. I spent a good chunk of Tuesday working on cover letters and getting my resume out for a few different jobs. Wouldn’t you know it, there was one job that not even 15 minutes after e-mailing them a resume, they called to schedule an interview.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quick response. Either they were desperate or my work history is good enough to warrant their snappy attention. Perhaps it wasn’t going to be so hard to get a job after all.

That’s exciting and scary all at the same time. At least my talents are getting noticed and appreciated, but after a year of doing my own thing, I wouldn’t mind it taking just a tad bit longer to end up back in the real world again.
What does the real world have to offer besides a paycheck? Stress, answering to a boss, having to get up at a decent time in the morning again – all for a paycheck.

On the other hand, I miss the discipline of a job. I even created this site so I’d have something to make myself do each week. It’s a creative outlet that makes me write and keep up with my photoshop skills as well as a way to keep myself on some type of schedule. Plus it’s a great excuse for not cooking or cleaning on those days when I can’t stand the drudgery of housework.

Oooh, there’s a good reason for the working world again! Even more housework that I can get out of. I’ll finally be able to use the “I work too” card and get my husband to do more around here without me feeling guilty. Score one for going back to work.

Another point for the working side is that I’ll get out of the house more often. I find excuses to go shopping and get out once in a while, but since I haven’t been working, I don’t like to waste transit money for random useless trips to places just for my own amusement.

I’ll not only have a reason to get out of the house, I’ll be contributing again so that I won’t feel bad spending money on things like random trips to go do things just for fun. The hubby is great about not being concerned with things like that. It’s my own hang-up about being a non-contributor that keeps me from doing things.

Hopefully whatever job comes along will be able to offer me many more positives to add to that list of going back to work.
